Lightweight Tent for Hicking, Backpacking or Quick Get Away

Throw a lightweight tent on the back seat of the car for a quick escape to nature. This is just one of the advantages of a light tent.

Usually people hiking are looking for the smallest less weighty option available to fit into a backpack. It, however could be a simple necessity like a way to transport the tent and other camping gear to a campsite or even like me the lack of muscle power.

Backpacking and Hiking

Lightweight backpacking tents need to have a lot going for them. It needs to be light in weight and take up less space and in the same time give sufficient protection against the elements.

They should also be of good quality, durable and easy to use. Quick to pitch and effortless to fold and pack away.

A tent is usually the heaviest item in a backpack and therefore great consideration has to go into selecting the ideal tent. Advanced materials such as Cuban fiber is currently used to construct the lightest tents available. Spinnaker is also very popular, but is somewhat heavier than the former although more durable.

An additional feature is double or single wall tents. Double wall tents have two functions, the outer wall needs to keep moisture from coming in and the inside porous wall keeps moisture from accumulating on the inside.

Tent poles are also a heavy item. Some tents use a tracking pole for support making this ideal as there is no need to carry separate tent poles.

Single wall lightweight tents can weigh as little as 670g and double wall tents 1700g about 1.5 pounds.

Small Tents

Ordinary small tents are inexpensive

Small tents used solely to save space need not be of the lightest material or the most expensive.

Normally these tents are in a dome-like shape and very easy to pitch single-handed, which makes it a good proposition for people camping on their own. Also, very popular for families with bigger children that want to each sleep in their own tent.

Mostly constructed with nylon or polyester material and weighing as little as 4 kg, these tents are easy to handle and can be squeezed into small spaces.

Single wall tents are lighter in weight and quicker to pitch as double wall tents or tents with an extra fly sheet tend to be heavier and takes longer to pitch.

Consider the following specific requirements:

  • The main purpose of the tent - hiking, camping, mountaineering, etc.
  • How long the trip is going to be.
  • How many people need to sleep in the tent.
